Geocities, one of the very early age hosting provider established in 1994, is finally closing down.
The D-Date? 26 October 2009.
GeoCities allowed anyone to build a custom Web page for free and reserved a small amount of virtual storage to keep pictures and documents, perhaps the first mainstream example of an open, participatory and personal Internet, in which Yahoo paid about $3 billion in 1999 when GeoCities rose to unprecedented prominence as a top-five player on the Web.
Official statement by Yahoo explained that the decision is to focus on helping their customers explore and build relationships online in other ways, even though the network is still among the top 200 most-trafficked sites on the Internet, according to metrics tracker Alexa.
Goodbye Geocities, hello Facebook!
