Not enough with the over RM100 million spent on the 50th nationhood celebration by the Government, the national MCA Youth and the Federal Territory MCA Youth will jointly present Malaysia Jiwa & Semangatku 2007 All-Stars Concert on Sept 15.
Parliamentary Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang in his blog revealed that RM100 million is the figure admitted by Deputy Finance Minister Awang Adek, in which he was so coy about giving the figure when he was asked the question the day before.
Awang admitted that there were other items of expenditures outside the Prime Minister’s Department like the RM7.2 million figure (he did not touch on the RM8 million item) which would bring the total to RM100 million. He said he could not give a categorical answer that there would not be other figures but as far as he knew these were the substantial sums, and if there were other items they would not be major ones.
He said with 26 million population, the RM100 million tag worked out to about RM3 or RM4 per person once in 50 years, symbolising the peace, harmony and welfare enjoyed by the people.
It’s too much a figure spent unnecessarily merely to celebrate 50th Merdeka anniversary whereas the fund can be utilized for various need, which I don’t think I’ve the need to elaborate on how to put the RM100 million into good use.
Simultaneously, it’s ridiculous to read how a deputy minister trying to justify the RM100 million spent on 26 million Malaysians, which worked out to be a RM3 or RM4 per person as a great feat in promoting peace and unity, where in reality, many of us don’t really understand what’s there for us to celebrate after 50 years of independence, especially when racial polarization is at its worst and racial issues are sprouting everywhere?
Furthermore, it’s not about spending millions telling tall tales about peace, harmony and unity with thousands of Jalur Gemilang either on your car or your house’s front porch during the Merdeka month that determines one patriotism level or a way to instill a sense of patriotism into the mind of citizens, but rather, it’s about daily collective effort by every Malaysian doing good deeds for each and every Bangsa Malaysia, that to me, everyday is a Merdeka Day and also one of the best way to promote racial unity and telling the world that you’re proud to be a Malaysian.
So now, after the RM 100 million spent on the massive scale national celebration, do we really need to hold a massive scale concert as a showcase of youth unity and patriotism, an initiative to show we are proud to be part of Malaysia, 50 years after independence as what MCA Youth Chief Liew Tiong Lai said?

*sigh* What worries me more is not that 100mill has been spent on National Day, but that 100 mil CAN be spent and no one seems to give a hoot.
no spending means no money for the cronies. so it goes, the more spending the merrier. for whose benefit, now you know. for unity, you must be kidding. next day, you see the loud mouth BN ministers talking about racial dominance and shouting veil threats.
I personally think that 50th years of merdeka doesn’t mean that we need to spend RM100mil for the celebration. Patriotism is not to be shown by concert, massive marching, high cost fireworks….etc..patriotism is more on how much our contribution to the country growth, what have we done daily to make our country clean and what have we create to make others to respect our country. Ask ourself how far we have progress in Science & Technology(the best example is our automotive industry), what happen to our education system(our tertiary R&D still far behind others) and finally can our country survive without MNC from 1st world country investing at here(we must always remember more and more MNC are moving to China for investment).
