Politics anyone?

No thanks.

That’s how Malaysiakini concludes the sense of involvement of young Malaysians in politics.

"Young people are made to feel like politics is dirty."

"They feel a sense of helplessness. It doesn’t seem to make a difference whether they vote or not." [...]

"These young people,” he added, "go through their university years without any political involvement. Once they come out to work, they have forgotten about their idealism."

"For them, politics is a very alien concept. It’s a pity. We’re losing a lot of energy and passion."

It’s sad, really. Political awareness among Malaysia youth is high however, unfortunately, the involvement is low.

Be it polarization, education system or economical structure, as long as we can’t find the common value within multiracial context, we’ll continue to be ruined by top dogs.

Sorry, I cant agree with your "Political awareness among Malaysia youth is high" statement, at least not among the people I know.

The politicians chase away university students from joining politics during their study days as if it is the wrong thing to do, you could get expelled etc. As a result, they are afraid to join politics FOR LIFE or they prefer to make groups by means of business contacts rather than political. Masa kat U disuruh ‘concentrate on your studies’ jadi masa kerja terus ‘concentrate on your work’ secara automatik.

Steve: Maybe he was refering to himself and his circle of blogger friends.

    SK: How involved are you?

  • i’m with Steve – political awareness is low. so much so i would say it is political ignorance, which equates to low involvement. because i am one of these "young people" until recently. and i am still learning, because i don’t know where else to learn about the Malaysian political system and how our version of democracy works.

can i blame the education system? because i only know of the Msian universities teaching politics, urban Malaysians educated abroad or with private colleges do not have this access. where do they go to be politically educated the right way? and not be influenced the wrong way?
