Uncharted blogosphere

Thursday, May 24th, 2007 | 11:50 am @ SK

My worry turns reality and frankly speaking, this is the last thing that I’d want to see it going in Malaysia’s blogosphere.

Barely 2 months after the establishment of All Blogs (AB) which is chaired by Ahirudin Attan a.k.a Rocky with Screenshots’s Jeff Ooi as the vice-president, there is a new blog association in town founded by Susan Loone and KTemoc - People’s Alliance of Blogs (PABS).

However, with the objectives of PABS remain unknown, Jun-E says competition is good, with more choices of representation. However before we dwell further, my question is, do we really need such a split of choices at first place, especially when we’re under such tight scrutiny by Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin and co.?

I’m a realistic person and I know the fact that nasi sudah menjadi bubur. My wish is that bloggers who support either AB or PABS must remain cool about this, let’s not shooting down each other idea as we’ve greater feat to achieve, especially when comes to promote the freedom of expression through the existence of blogs.

Harmonius co-existence would be great. However even if it’s not possible too, let’s not make a big fool out of ourselves through unnecessary blog war (I hope not!) and by that time, we’d have failed ourselves tremendously and guess who’s going to have the last laugh?

You guess is as good as mine and it’s a lose-lose situation we must avoid at all cost.

Anybody is free to organise groups. But if they organise groups to snipe at each other or challenge ideologies to spite one another or to form another group because their assumed leaders are not being heard; or they form another group because of perceived superiority of ideals or their take on blogging is not given enough airing by others, then I say it will not help blogging. The premise of the Alliance of Bloggers is straight forward: promote blogging and protect bloggers. No personal agenda, no championing of any political party even if individual bloggers are card-carrying members. Go ahead form as many as you can, but stay on course….help and assist each other for the common good of blogging. But if your group is formed to cause dissension amongst bloggers then I tell you, grow up, get real. In organisations, there are a multitude of people who will not see your view of things, if you are not avowed followers of their line of thinking. Go ahead, form twenty or forty…but stay united as bloggers with one agenda - unity. Blogging is such a young phenomena….we need to nurture it to maturity to be recognised as a useful resource for the betterment of our citizens and the country. Enjoy blogging but dont get personal. You dont have to say that one group is no good and that you represent the good. And dont say that because that group doesnt give you an answer they are no good. God dont send thunder bolts when he does not get answers. I remember, the last time he tried and he said, "Missed the bastard." Peace to bloggers of goodwill and Piss to those who cause dissension.

Yes SK, different bloggs can come out with myriad ideologies, but must stay united as bloggers…..to each his own mah!

SK: While it is commendable for people to try to organize themselves I think they are missing the point about blogs and bloggers. They are strongest when they do their own thing and are unregulated. Then the wisdom of crowds prevail. The Swarm is many disparate individuals and one a the same time.

When you get people together like the groups that the Malaysian bloggers are doing, rivalry and petty politicking results. You then do not have the wisdom of crowds but the foolishness of mobs.

But then again it may be just a Malaysian characteristic to think that they are better or more correct than others.

I shouldn’t worry too much about 2 or 3 different groups for blogs.

As long as they have a code of universal values like freedom of expression and mutual respect.

ie everyone should have the basic decency to be able to agree to disagree without resorting to car bombs etc.

Keep writing. I don’t believe I will sign up with any group yet :)

I believe time being in should be focusing on one single group, the existing one… instead of creating a new one, they should look into what was the difference of ideology and work from there..

A new group would further divide the bloggers when already now they can’t capture the non socio political bloggers….

links from Technorati. As noted by Mamak, it seemed to be formed in reaction to the perceived politicisation of All-Blogs. The meaning of the acronym is not clear: shar101 says it is ‘People’s All-Blogs Society’, whereasSKsays it means ‘People’s Alliance of Blogs’. I can’t find a reference on the two founding members’ blogs. It is apparently still active, as an August 4th post by Ktemoc entitled “ PABS calls on Government to embrace bloggers
