Azmi Sharom: … and the world laughing along with me

Friday, May 18th, 2007 | 2:35 am @ SK

Dr. Azmi Sharom, an associate professor of the Law Faculty of Universiti Malaya, in his column Brave New World on The Star, did a brilliant sum-up by sending a few reminders to politicians in Malaysia on why they shouldn’t be accorded with too much of respect and how those so-called people’s representatives fooling themselves in the Parliament.

Nevertheless, how woman MP can defend the insensitive MPs perplexed him the most when the world is laughing on us of having a truly funny parliament.

I am one of those people who think that politicians are given far too much respect.

After all, they are only where they are because of us. It would be nice therefore to take them down a peg or two every now and then to remind them of this fact.

This would normally be the job of satirists and the like and could take the form of the written word or stand-up comedy or even television puppet shows. Unfortunately, we don’t have very much of that in these parts. […]

We don’t have many people who can play the Shakespearean fool in Malaysia, someone who can show up those in power. But with clowns like Bung in our Parliament, we don’t really need to, as they are more than capable of being fools themselves.

And what wonderful comedic support he has, too.

When one of their fellows said a totally despicable thing and then gets off scot-free, many cheered. Oh, how they cheered.

Hurrah, one of us has made a "joke" that we would be ashamed to make in front of our mothers, but never mind, he got let off. Hip, hip, hurrah!

Or what about the woman MP who defended this jester Bung? I simply must remember my best period joke to tell her if we were ever to meet. I am sure she will find it humorous and in the best possible taste.

Indeed, Bung the fool has plenty of supporting players to make that comedy stage we call our Parliament a truly funny place indeed.

How I laughed. And I think I can hear the world laughing along with me.

And then, I laugh.

I have always seen Bung as the court jester (note that I don’t use capital letters for C & J). I don’t accord respect to jestors in an august house.

There was a female commented that the 2 MPs were typical Malay chauvinist. Then, came the term MMCP - Malay Male Chauvinist [DELETED by SK]. Now, I am sure many will take offense. Sabar dik … lets look at the situation in a civil manner and evaluate the backgrounds of this claims. Also it is good to be objective if there is any improvements needed for the good of Malaysia. 1. Do Malays by tradition and custom plays women on a lower ground than men? 2. Do Malays by tradition find it funnier to raise gender insensitive jokes? Since this is a topic of male treatment towards female, let us talk about the comment about “typical Malay chauvinists”. The question is do Malays put women on equal grounds with men. 1. Are there women leaders in the mosque/surau? 2. Why do women cover their heads? What does that symbolise? Does it symbolise a lower position? 3. And if that is ingrained in Malay culture, what are Malay male response towards this culture especially in growing feminism trend throughout the world? If it is based on a culture and tradition, at least it takes modern minds to break out of this tradition and give women the equal grounds they deserve. Maybe the female blogger made the remark about “typical Malay chauvinists” from experience. Let us hear from other bloggers. [DELETED by SK]
