Tengku Adnan, Nila Tanzil & Malaysia Tourism Board in Jakarta

Friday, March 16th, 2007 | 3:44 pm @ SK

On one hand, Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor called bloggers as liars and that 80% of bloggers are unemployed women. Bad PR.

Ironically, on the other hand, Malaysia Tourism Board (MTB) in Jakarta putting up and advertisement in The Jakarta Post, calling for "experienced Public Relations Agency". This was highlighted by blogger Unspun, in which he commented as saying that, wonders never cease.

Indeed, it’s truly amazing and wonders never seem to cease.

While it’s for sure that MTB is in urgent need of a very good PR, Unspun who owns a PR agency (Click here to read the corporate blog) in Jakarta, however isn’t optimistic.

"The MTB’s image, which reflects on Malaysia, is now so bad to anyone who can read a newspaper or a blog that there is nothing a PR firm can do to help them, unless there is a genuine wish on their part to stop living in denial, confront their problems and do something about it before communicating," he said.

The good news is, Unspun is willing to do the PR for Malaysia and MTB free-of-charge, but with a few conditions.

As it isThe MTB spends millions of ringgit of malaysian taxpayers money. It brings in some tourists but not as many as it can if it has good PR. Good PR is about communicating credibly. Malaysia and the MTB has a PR problem but it can’t be fixed unless it addresses the real problem - incompetents without people and communications skills among other deficiencies put in high positions of responsibility. Sort that out and Unspun will even do the PR for Malaysia and the MTB free of charge.

Unfortunately, Tengku Adnan has just denied by saying that he was misquoted by the press and what he meant he had meant only the Indonesian blogger Nila Tanzil.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan, listen properly, Nila is not a liar either. She lost her loves one in the accident of Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 737-400 jetliner flying from Jakarta to Yogyakarta with 133 passengers and seven crew members on board, last March 7.

Nila Tanzil had expressed her gratitude to all bloggers. However, she was suspended by SCTV after that post in her blog.

Its true that there’s Nothing any PR firm can do Unless MTB cease the approach that they’ve developed on assumptions. Criticism is natural and they will have to confront.
