Saturday, March 10th, 2007 | 10:05 pm @ SK

[UPDATED VERSION] March 8, it’s International Women’s Day, an occasion marked by women’s groups around the world.

On the similar day itself, called this plain insensitive or mere coincidence, Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor condemned bloggers as liars and was quoted as saying that 80% of bloggers are unemployed women.

Tengku Adnan: Bloggers are Liars
80% are Unemployed Women
updated:2007-03-08 20:11:32: MYT

(Kuala Lumpur) The Tourism Minsiter Tengku Adnan lashed out today (Mar 8, 2007) that all bloggers on the Internet are liars, out of which 80% are unemployed women.

"All bloggers are liars, they cheat people using all kinds of methods. From my understanding, out of 10,000 unemployed bloggers, 8,000 are women."

Tengku was addressing the media at the 2007 Malaysia GP Sales when he was asked about allegations made on a blog by a female TV presenter. The guests present were shocked at first, but burst into laughter.

The female TV presenter is Nila Tanzil, happened to be the colleague of Jakarta-based Malaysian blogger Unspun. Immediately. Unspun highlighted Nila’s bad experience when she was in Malaysia to cover the opening of Floral Festival 2007, through invitation by Malaysia Tourism Board.

I picked up the entry and highlighted the case in this blog. Subsequently, The Star’s Deputy Group EIC and blogger Wong Chun Wai highlighted the case in his weekly column too. He warned that after so much efforts being poured into the VMY 2007, the last thing the Tourism Ministry needs is poor execution from low-level officials and called upon officials to rectify problems while getting feedback from reporters as well as bloggers from time to time.

As for myself, while my questions remain unanswered, not only shows that Tengku Adnan doesn’t take the complaint seriously, worse, he went as far as to condemn woman bloggers based on his observation?

"Don’t you even have a heart? Weren’t you taught manners and etiquette in school or at home?," another blogger Elizabeth Wong asked.

But really, something is really not right here. Then again, like it or not, this is the kind of people that you’ve chosen to sit atop and …..

In closing, sir, IF YOU CANNOT DAZZLE US WITH YOU INTELLIGENCE, PLEASE DO NOT BAFFLE US WITH YOUR IMBECILITY.” 10. SKThew says Tengku Adnan’s statement, which was made in response to Nila Tanzil’s bad experience as an “invited guest” to the ministry’s VMY media campaign, shows that the minister did not take kindly to criticisms.

So I guess I’m the only one who found this whole thing immensely hilarious? A high-ranking minister in the Federal Government having a very public meltdown must surely be the most entertaining (if surreal) thing to watch.

links from TechnoratiIn a bid to crawl out of the woodwork, the Tourism Minister paraphrases Epimenides, with predictably catastrophic results. The gaffe, picked up by Chinese dailies in the country, soon had the female half of the local blogosphere fuming. Plus, the timing could not have been worse. Now, I don’t read the Chinese papers (because it would take too long, and I don’t know most of the characters), particularly because, like their Hongkie counterparts, they have a tendency to sensationalise. But we are
