To Tony Fernandes, X doesn’t stand for Xpress but Xtra long.

"We are proud in being able to continue to lead and revolutionize aviation industry in Asia, just as we did with AirAsia," [...]
"Ultimately the launch of AirAsia X will bring independence to the long haul low cost traveler by providing a choice of service for their long-haul travel requirement."
Starting from July, AirAsia X, a new long haul budget service by Fly Asian Xpress (FAX), will start operations in July by flying to Manchester, Huangzhou and Tianjin with the lowest ticket price at RM9.99, targetting to be on sales from next month.
The Transport Ministry has granted AirAsia X landing rights at 36 international destinations in Asia, Europe and Australia. Among them are Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, Melbourne and Osaka.
Despite rumours that AirAsia X would tie-up with the United Kingdom-based Virgin Group and EasyJet to launch this, Fernandes named no partners. However, he admitted there is on-going discussion with easyJet and Virgin Atlantic and would tie up with other low-cost carriers "in order to increase connectivity and route network".
Meanwhile, NST reported that MAS in a statement, national carrier Malaysiar Airlines (MAS) said it is confident that there is room for both a full service airline and a long-haul low-cost carrier in Malaysia.

Horray!! AirAsiaX ends its speculation and delays and scores its first defeat in its long haul aircraft selection. It ordered the Old outdated Airbus 330-300. Like everthing in life, what goes up must come down.!The struggling French Airbus had conned Datuk Tony Fernandes into a French Farce. Airbus is a crippling company with enormous problems with enormous risks with new Aircraft design and deliveries. Datuk Fernandes failed to capture the imagination and creature comfort needs for no frills long haul flights. The Business Model was not investigated with vigor and the selection of aircraft was a hasty decision of "over expansionism". The timing of AirAsiaX to entere this market should had been a choice of the newer Boeing’s Dreamliner or Airbus 350 xWBA. Both were technologically superior to the Airbus 330-300. Oasis Hong Kong are usinfg leased SIA 747-400 Aircrafts. The optimum plane to propel AirAsiaX would be the Boeing 777 -300ER for the interim period as AirAsiaX develops its business model for its future long haul operations for 2009. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft would have avoided the stop over requirement at Dubai increasing inconvenience and extended travel time to Europe which passengers do not want. AirAsiaX was turning passengers flight time back 30 years when all aircraft refuelled at Dubai. The 777-300ER is the most technically superior aircraft with outstanding comfort, though only marginally less fuel efficient. It is surprising that Conor O’Reiley (ex ryan air) who is head of operations failed to chose the correct aircraft for AirAsiaX. Perhaps, the invinsible Datuk Fernandes is beginging to show “cracks” with Tune Hotels and Financial Services all coming under spotlight.
