Homemade firecrackers

Festive seasons are supposed to be a joyious time for all. However, unfortunately, quite a small number of them must end up celebrating it in sombre mood, due to self-recklessness. In this case, it’s all about "self-made firecrackers".

(SOURCE: The Star, 27 September 2006)
Since 1991, firecrackers and fireworks are banned by the government, includes its manufacture, import, sale, purchase, possession and use. However, self-made firecrackers are still pervasive, with carbide normally used as the main explosive content.
Due to that, injuries caused by homemade firecrackers were reported every year during pre-season celebration. As the kids are still young at age, the question is, is now the time for severe punishment to be meted out against parents for negligence in discharging their responsibilities?
It’s not the first time and it’s definitely not going to be the last time that we’re going to listen to such injuries reports. It’s time to make someone accountable for that, once and for all.

burning firecrackers is burning money. it serves no practical purpose. what a waste of resources.
and what a price to pay when our young ones lose a limb over playing with ffireworks!

Wow, you can actually sell carbide to a 13 year old kid?

I think government shouldn’t ban firecracker, but to educate the people how to play it safely.
even now it’s already banned. but almost every year still has this kind of tragedy happen. so what’s the point.
if everytime government just have to ban something because affraid of the bad influence or the negative outcome. it’s just like sweeping the dust under the carpet. nothing really solve. because people not really aware of that.
teach the people, let them aware of how dangerous it can be and also how fun it can be if you play it safely. then let the people make their own decision whehter they want to play it or not.
let say for the kid who was born after 1991, they can be 13-15 now.
they din play very much firecracker compare to my time. some even never play before. I am sure they know very less how dangerous firecracker can be.
and i don’t think government put enough public service anouncement about this issue, almost none i guess. so what if the kid fall under this age range(the kid above also born after 1991) go to other country and travel and happen to celebrate playing firecracker with other people, they may be the one who careless and then burn other people, because they just not aware of it, not all the countries ban firecracker.and i don’t think we want other country to know that our people know nothing about awareness of playing firecracker.
and i think fireworks is fun to play, and it’s worth the money. if everything need to have practical pupose. then lots of thing we have to stop doing now.
instead of spend huge amount of money to build the largest, longest or biggest,
should spend more money on Human Science( this is what our PM Mr.Abdullah Badawi trying to do,that’s why i support him). Educate the people.train them to think and also follow the rules. not just follow. let the people know how to make decision.
If this country want to make 1 more step foward. upgrade the people mentality first.

Some kopitiam rumours claim that all the firecrackers business in malaysia are owned by one of the 4 big taikos who even has connection to very high-ranked MCA leaders and managed to get their raided firecrackers(whole container) back from custom clean-handed.

I for one disagree with spending more public money on educating the young.
Educating the dangers of fireworks belong within the sphere of family education. You expect gomen to take over the role of the family? What next? You want a class to teach children how to make their beds?
Whether you educate kids of not, there will always be recalcitrants (me included). So, let the parents of those kids who has lost their limbs worry about their own kids.

honestly this kid was never told to not play with fireworks or to be careful. i mean come on any person who has lit off firecrackers when they were a kid knew not to look at it right after you hear one explosion. Let kids play with fireworks, they will eventually learn one way or another that without proper responsibility you will end up hurt, or your friends will. Don’t try to be all political about banning them when really your the hypocrite, because you know that you played with firecrackers when you were around this age. Kids experimented then and they will forever do, because thats just life, experiencing things on your own. unfortunately this kid experienced the bad part
