From Mat Rempit to Mat Cemerlang to Mat Cemerlang’s Club, the nation’s asset as claimed by Putera Umno chief Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim are in the limelight since the day one.
Azeez thinks he has the ability to burnish the image of fellow mats, through the mat cemerlang re-branding, through the establishment of clubs and through the "we’re brothers" handshake to woo them into supporting Umno youth movement.
Apparently, while the so-called nation’s asset do or do not realise the fact that they are taken for a ride to generate cheap publicity, The Star’s Rahaizad A. Rahim is questioning how does Putera Umno thinks that the image of Mat Rempit can be redeemed?

It is a difficult issue for Putera Umno to address. On paper, the movement’s attempt to reach out to the youth in this sub-culture is good, but what people care about is the results.What the movement should address is the anti-establishment attitude of Mat Rempit when it comes to respecting the law. It will do the movement no good if those they want to reach out to continue to flout the law.
Therefore, the movement should look into a comprehensive solution to the problem. A re-branding exercise sounds good, but it will remain just that.
While the Umno Youth was seen as rushing to pull them together and urge them to run within the law, it’s however, the motivation (exciting andrealina rush) behind illegal racing that push them to the limit, such as the temptation of fame, money, drugs and girls as well as temptation of exceeding speed limits and performing "superman stunts" which Malaysia’s Mat Cemerlang are famous of.
Those are the reasons that Umno Youth needs to find out if the intention is sincere to guide them into the proper track. Perhaps a better option for movment is to work with authorities and on how to educate them.

If it is merely "for show only", I believe that there are many people of different types (other than Mat Rempit) that could benefit more from the resources thrown into such an exercise. Especially for those that really deserves it and in need of aid.

you don’t call school bullies a national asset, just like you don’t say that those snatch thieves are people with unrealised potential and untapped energies. next thing you know these jokers will tell us that all those junkies in our alleys are potential medical assistants given their affinity with the needles!
amazingly, even someone like rohaizad rahiim can see and was sick enough with the whole thing to write about it and damn it. rohaizad, as you know, was the pm’s 2nd press secretary (the foreign ministry portfolio, when pak lah was dpm, i believe). rohaizad was sent to the star (to rot and strut his bloated ego) as soon as pak lah became prime minister as they had no use for him. for many many months people at the star didn’t know or were unsure if rohaizad was still on the payroll. he comes in and goes off as he likes, it seems.
but the mat cemerlang idea must have been so hideous to him that he cared to comment about it. and i must say rohaizad made good sense out of the whole thing.

If you ask me, its a cheap trick by UMNO to win votes from the Mat Rempits. Being an anti-establishment group, they most likely constitute a sizable non-voting population. If UMNO can capitalize on their loyalty during the election, UMNO can reduce their dependence on the non-Malay votes to stay in power. I don’t think Putera believes in the feasibility of ‘taming wild tigers’, they just see an opportunity to consolidate their power in the face of the current racial turmoil.
