Corruption level

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 | 1:02 am @ SK

"Has corruption gotten worse in Malaysia?", blogger Unspun asked.

Why does this sound more and more like Indonesia? Perhaps Indonesians should not complain so much about how bad corruption is in their country, certainly if compared to their serumpun neighbor.

There is void of any real indicator to determine the level of corruption in any particular country, thus we’ve to rely on the general perception, which of course, is varied across community.

But really, the question is, what do you think of the corruption level right here in our home soil? Is it better off compared to Tun’s era or has it gone down the drain ever since?

Pray do tell.

I don’t know if corruption has increased but it certaintly has not lessen more importantly its clear that lawlessness has increased i.e., the rule of law and integrity is increasingly becoming a joke in our society.

I think if you place a survey on this blog to ask who (Malaysian) has been involved in corruption or been asked for a bribe, you’ll see how evidently corrupt the country is.

I have been openly asked by policemen for bribes, not once but a couple of times. I stood my ground though and refused to give any. How many will do the same and endure the hassles and hurdles that come when bribe is not given?

I don’t know how you define corruption level, but now I can’t "settle" with just RM20-30 anymore. It seems the "minimum payment" is already increased to RM50.

Hard to define the level of corruption based only on our daily dealings, what about those high level corruption involving tens of thousands of $$? The regular citizens won’t have a clue about those…
