Walt Disney: No plans to build Disneyland in Malaysia!

Thursday, June 1st, 2006 | 3:16 am @ SK

Despite all fancy talks of setting up of Disneyland in Malaysia, Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday that it has no plans to build a theme park in Malaysia.

"We are constantly exploring opportunities around the world as we look to grow our parks and resorts business. At this time, however, there are no existing discussions in Malaysia and we currently have no plans for a Disney-branded resort development in that country," Lisa Haines, a spokeswoman for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, told the media. […]

"Oriental Land Company, which owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort as our licensee, is a valued partner; however, they have no role in evaluating or negotiating other opportunities for Disney outside of Japan."

Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Effendi Norwawi denied saying that the Government was bringing Disneyland into Malaysia.

"At no point did I categorically say that we are bringing Disneyland into the country."

Is Universal Studios the next option available? Else, what’s next?

Our neighbour down South is making a mockery out of our nation with this incident.

It is on the frontpage of TODAY (Singapore’s equivalent of the Sun at Malaysia), dated today.

We seem to allow ourselves to be embarrased not once, not twice, but N times by our neighbours… Even the smallest or least significant happenings among the rakyat (especially at the Detroit-notorious equivalent city of JB).

What does it say about our leaders when they are chasing pipe dreams? It means that not only does the leadership have no clear sound foundation of what is possible but the people that support them, their coterie of advisors and staff, are also irrresponsible and incapable.

On the surface, Universal Studio may seem to make more sense than Disneyland, as its less demanding in terms of tourist numbers, resident sizes and its brand is more universal. The problem is that Universal Studio usually chooses areas that have a theme park industry. Precisely because it does not have as strong a brand as Disney, Universal Studio prefers synergy with other theme park/attractions. Universal would make more sense to built in Singapore with the casinos than in Malaysia which is what Genting is proposing.

The government should put attention on the basic stuff like public transport and security before they think they are qualified to propose something like that to Disney(unless Disney has a plan to build ‘cowboy’-themed Disneyland here)
