Time dotCom confirms talk with Jaring; MiTV needs RM1b

Yesterday, The Star’s B. K. Sidhu asked: Will the once hotly-debated merger between Jaring and Time dotCom Bhd become a reality now that the latter has been given a new lease of life with a 3G spectrum?

While public expecation remain skeptical with the all-time on-and-off speculation, the issue has been thrown into limelight once again by a report by Yahoo! News.

KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)–TIME dotCom Bhd. (5031.KU) confirmed Wednesday that it is in talks with Jaring Communications, but said it hadn’t been informed of whether the state-owned internet service provider wants to buy TIME’s assets.

Personally, I hope the merger exercise will go through, good enough to provide a competitive edge for the current broadband market. Surely, TM Net as the sole broadband provider will have to buck up or else risk losing unsatisfactory customers.

However, one question is running in my mind now: What’s up with MiTV?

We shall see.

Competition brings improvements, i think TMnet will only be really improving their services if there is a competator that can challenge their domination of broadband service.

Same goes for other fields and industries, having only one organisation dominating the market is bad.

Example, look at MAS now, how many years ago when there were the only airline company operating in Malaysia? Now when AirAsia comes in and compete, look at how MAS "dies" off? Look at how weak an organisation can be when there is no competition?

The only way to create competition is to allow private parties to compete fairly, which is very unlikely with how things operate in Malaysia, politic here politic there……

Same goes to Proton until Perodua comes along and is doing better.

  3. Anonymous Thing says:

Proton is still a lousy car manufacturer even if Perodua came along…

And yes i think it’s a good thing if they merge…. TM Nut is just unbearable nowadays…
