Massive protest at KLCC?

Friday, March 3rd, 2006 | 10:42 am @ SK

[UPDATED VERSION] A massive protest over the government’s sharp fuel price hike will be taking place at the iconic Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) at 2pm this afternoon, where protestors are expected to march from the KLCC mosque after the Friday’s prayer.

PAS Central Committee member Hatta Ramli expects a crowd of 5000 people to turn up with placards and banners, in which opposition parties like Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), human rights group Suaram and citizens coalition Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (JERIT) are expected to turn up at the rally.

"This is not a PAS affair. Everyone who are angry over the petrol hike should come," Hatta stressed.

Imagine, angry people with angry faces in front of KLCC, which is one of the hottest tourist spot in Malaysia. If they are to protest over the petrol price increment, demanding an immediate government intervention, this blogger is praying hard for no other than — divine intervention.

  5. AJ says:

yeah…agreed. The opposition party is taking this fuel price hike to gain the support from the citizens to protest our government. Wake up dear civilized citizens!!

  6. Saya Boleh says:

Better focus on conserving our natural resources than getting angry over the price hike - Travelling to KLCC itself will use up fuel. The protest will be futile, and fuel will yet again be wasted.

    I concur with JL.

Perhaps the people protesting should go find themselves a job where they actually have to be AT WORK. Maybe then they would have money to buy petrol, eh??

  10. Tien Soon says:

The external compound of KLCC Tower 2 is now full of FRUs. Red units already standby and closed traffic on the main route heading to the mosque.

  11. Tien Soon says:

The crowd is now started moving to the direction of Petronas Tower 2

[SK] Those might be normal crowd walking back to Tower 2 after their prayers, don’t get the wrong alert. Last check down there, it’s only police and FRU, but no crowd. ;-)

  12. Tien Soon says:

haha yeah my position was too high… mis-interpreted the crowd LoL

now FRU is lining up like marching

[SK] Those people started to walk from the mosque and went around to Jalan Ampang, in front of Pelita now. ;-)

What will happen if opposition become gov? How sure are u the price won’t hike? We won’t know but my instinct tell me, debt will be even worse..and petrol sure naik oso no matter who protest…

This is the time for the opposition to seek popularity…They voice but not the right way as well…Y not make a petition, getting everyone sign up and send to Agung or PM. That would be better rite.

Doing demonstration is not a good way…it will cause traffic jams and affected other people’s life. Do it somewhere else. Putrajaya would be better. Spacious….

it’s not just about having the government to decrease the price of the petrol after the protest anymore.
for those who said that this protest is useless and a waste of time, i wouldnt blame you for saying out those naive and foolish words.
well, i think it’s time to let the governmemnt know that we will not just sit quietly and let them cut our throat just like that. and at the same time, this is to raise more public awareness and consciousness, especially people like you who thinks that this protest is a waste of time and energy.
perhaps you really wouldnt mind paying that extra rm1 for a plate of chicken rice daily  from today onwards, and extra bucks on petrol just because your work requires you to do so!

  49. Nian says:

Typical Malaysians. Admit defeat before they even try. Its this sort of "no point protesting" mentality that allows this corrupt government to trive.

If you are financially well off, you dont have to worry. But what about the mamak man you buy your teh tarik from? What about the news paper vendor? They dont earn much in the first place. They are the one hardest hit.

Personally, the Malaysian gov sowed the seeds of reliance on subsidies. The people have been too reliant on. it. They sowed the seeds, well, the seeds of discontent are now sprouting out.

You may call the protests causing trouble, making you stuck in a jam while youre stuck in your air cond BMW/Mercedes/volvo/whatever. Spare a thought for the people who can only afford a motorcycle. their petrol bills will go up  RM15/month just beause of the 30 sen hike.

The rich are the ones who make the biggest noise in the gov press. Its the poor that have no voice. And when they do get a voice tru the oppositon parties, the rich calls them making trouble.

REMEMBER: petrol subsidies only benefit the rich. Its the poor that suffer the most.

I heard a BrianLee mentioned about a petition? Even those non-muslim ministers send a god damn memorandum to Abdullah failed to bring any result…and you talk about a bloody petition, you know, thats so stupid.

I hope you don’t come out voting coz you got no balls to vote for the opposition even though this BN sucked all your blood, money…better stay at home and sleep when election comes, OK?

  51. anonymous coward says:

30 cent only? yup protest won’t make the price down but we shown to our goverment that we anger with the situation. we show to them that we are not lambs that can be kept cool down with some silly excuse and we know we have the right to protest. that why we must protest. we hope the protest will provent any future oil price increase and we hope that goverment will think more than twice or we put them in ‘a very good situation’ in the next GE.

  52. somebody says:

next time dont just simply vote for for Boleh Naik, coz this is what will happen..all can naik…why dont we put some check and balance in the cabinets, exercise your vote, vote for the opposition, i know they would win as a whole, but at least, what will it be if you can see those opposition party fight for things like these in the parliament…rite now, the opposition has not enough power to cancel out anything…what if we can give them more power..with that, they cannot do anything at their own will..any new action for the country will need to be tabled out in the parliament, discussed and then implement..with these check and balance in place, at least we can hope that the opposition party did some job to try and help us…i am a low income workor, and i am totally affected by these price hike..i do support the protest in klcc, if it’s done in a calm way..let the gov knows..that’s we dont take it easy..i just dont want to be those naive Malaysian person who reads only one sided views that was controlled by the gov..and just nodded their head, accepting all the outcome on all the news…they didnt see the broader side..read some alternative news and you will know how ‘great’ our gov is..:D

    just my personal view..

I agree with Nian. I don’t understand how Malaysians can always quietly accept all those bullshits from our gov. Isn’t it time to exercise our brains and start thinking what is right / wrong, and what we can do as part of the society. Protest is one way to voice out. Nobody start a riot or something, right? So those are civilzed good people. Just sitting there your luxury cars and watch those with lower income suffer. How selfish and ignorance! You thought this is a good chance for opposition party to get publicity? Well, probably. But hey, this is fair and just world. If you do wrong, you will be critizised. Doesn’t matter if it’s by civilians or opposition parties. Who asked you to leave your brain under the bed when you manage the country? And by the way, didn’t someone mention that this petrol price hike is another coverup act because MAS is losing money?!!

    Currency                      =     RM1.00   vs.   Baht10.7
    Petrol price                 =    RM1.92   vs. RM2.52

    Toyota
    vios price           =    RM85k    vs   RM46k (Baht500k/10.7)
    If consumption/month   =     Rm250    vs    RM328 (RM250/1.92*2.52)
    Car prices difference     =     RM39k (RM85K-RM46K)
    Difference for petrol      =     9.9 years (RM39K/RM328/12)

Base on above calculation, if you change a new car in every 10 years & consume petrol in , do you know that? You eventually dun need a single sen to buy petrol up for 10 years.

  64. Nick C says:

I support u, choo!  Why government dont wipe off the bloody AP and highly reduce the extreme excise duty for all import cars when they raised up the petrol price up to RM1.92/liter ??   Plus the toll fee will increase every several years, why don’t they reduce the toll fee as well ??  Government promised to reduce subsidy but increase the construction of the country. Can they really do it? They also promised to improve our public transport system, but the bus still taking 2 hours and 15 minutes for a ride from KL to Selayang baru, which actually just spend you 20 minutes drive by car or taxi.

It’s time to raise our civilisation mind to be a civilzed citizen!  Voice out your dissatisfaction to the government. We must not be afraid to the government.
