Five-day week for banks: Are you very much affected?

Thursday, January 26th, 2006 | 12:00 pm @ SK

[UPDATED VERSION] Via The Star:

I’m all for this idea as my other half is in banking industry and it’s not like I have that much of banking activities. If there is any, I’d duly do so on weekdays.

However, I understand that most people will take their own sweet time to perform any banking  transactions on Saturday, to avoid long queue and unnecessary rush.

How about you? Are  you very much affected by the new five-days working week?

I think it’s a good idea. As it is, i do all my banking with the ATMs and Online Banking. I just wish they’d replace all the ATMs with units that Collect as well as dispense cash, instead of a machine each.

Errmm… for me, not at all.

About 80% of my banking are online and 19% is via ATMs and CDMs. The 1% is for those rare Amanah Saham stuff.

I reckon there are two things that banks in Malaysia should also consider when implementing the five-day week.

    1) Invest in the technology to enhance the reliability and availability of ATM-based transactions, so that customers can do most of their banking 24-7.

    2) Operate consumer banking halls like a retail outlet, i.e. 10am - 8pm, at least for specific branches with high human traffic such as KLCC, Mid Valley and similar locations. This would be handy for non-cash services such as credit applications, account opening / closure, giro / bill payment services, etc.

It will take a period of adjustment, especially for the second idea, but I believe that it would be a worthwhile pursuit.

I agree with Spiller - its TOTALLY inconvenient for those of us who only have time to do our banking after normal office hours.

Hey, did they forget that a majority of us are not government servants who can sneak off during their numerous breaks to do their stuff?

Maybe it’s high time a local bank sets up service stations at all major shopping centres that operate 7 days a week. That will garner them more business than those counters they open to merely sell credit cards.

hmm…let’s just say there’s nothing wrong with having a 5-day week. I really pity my friends who had to work even on Saturdays.

Though there will be inconveniences caused by the Saturdays that these banks are not opened, but I am sure the banks will make it up with much more reliable online banking procedures. Unless of course, they are happy with their current businesses and decided it’s time to stop attracting new customers.

I have also not bothered to go to Banks on Saturdays anyway, as I am not even sure which Saturdays they are opened…so makes no difference to me :-P

The only inconvenience I find is that these banks closes too early which made the banking-day very short.
