MyKad: Last minute rush

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005 | 9:39 pm @ SK

It’s definitely a last minute rush for MyKad, at least for a major portion of the 1.2 million ignorant Malaysians, including this blogger.

However, I was impressed by the efficiency shown by those diligent officers, working round the clock at Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN), as late applicants after the December 31 dateline will be fined an amount which is yet to be finalised.

This morning, I woke up later than expected and a call to the JPN general line at 03-88807000 was promptly picked up, saying that queue numbers final pick-up time is at 1500.

I arrived at around 1030 with an expected long queue and was given a queue number half-an-hour later.

To be frank, I never expect this to be that fast. With 13 counters online, even though it took me about 7 hours before my turn, I’m feeling good with the smooth-sailing process.

Also, no signs of anxiety or impatience among the public too, afterall, one’s has got to blame ownselves for the last-minute rush.

A quick check on the officer who entertained my application shows that total applicants for today itself is around 3000. The woman officer who took my photo was kind too, offered to retake my photo if I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. In fact, the application part itself only used up less than 10 minutes, however it’s the waiting process that kills. :p

Oh, forgot to mention the part that, the news article on the angry Pak Azmi are pasted everywhere, but heck, who cares anyway?

Splendid evening scenery at Putrajaya, with camera at home. Ah, that must be a curse!

Hehe .. allow me to join you in your gang of ignoramuses. I too only decided to wait until last Monday to get my IC "upgraded". First went to Puchong’s JPN @ around 8.45 to be told that they have run out of "nombor giliran". Took a quick drive down to Putrajaya and arrived about 9.05. Getting my number was a breeze, took only about 5 minutes .. but it was about 6 hours later when my number was finally called :P I do agree with you that the JPN officers did a laudable job.

Unfortunately, I didn’t share your appreciation of the "scenery" of Putrajaya, esp. Precinct 2. The place gave me the creeps. Everything was so monumental and "artificial". The buildings reminded me of the scene from the movie, The Downfall, when Adolf Hitler was rueing over a model of his dream Berlin with the Russians at the gates of the city. It didn’t help that I passed by Dengkil on my way back and saw the great contradictions between the humble abodes of the estate workers and farmers and the relatively palatial quarters built for the senior civil servants and apparatchiks. Sigh

When I actually look into Precint 9 from Precint 2, it’s so nice!

Must do some shooting there in the future. ;-)

Sometimes procastination is good….I changed to mykad when they just introduced mykad (with the 32K chip version though)in 2001. They announced the 64K version after a while(the beta test ended??) and 32K-64k upgrade is not free, even before Dec-31. During my time when I did my mykad, that is like a year ago. The process of getting it done is really good, althought the wait is long (abt 3hrs). However, I didn’t blame them as there is really a lot of ppl. What amazes me is that they can manage the croud and after hours behind the counter, they are still very patient and courteous. This I would say even the private customer service counters need to learn from them.

    TK,

I don’t doubt that the infrastructural development will eventually reach Dengkil .. and it might become "cun" .. albeit superficially. I am more concerned about the human cost. How many more estate workers and be evicted from their homes when the estates close down and sell out to developers. How many more of them will join the migration to urban areas and beef up the numbers already in our urban ghettoes simply because we refuse to acknowledge their existence (no good for demographical stats and "foreign" investment mah).

If you’d known the stories of the peoples who lost their homes and livelihoods during the development of Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and KLIA .. you might have an idea what I’m referring to. Then again, the poor have always been untermensch eh?

  8. TK says:

hmmm,we have sacrifice for development..sadly, mostly, the "orang atas" will enjoy the benefit..and those poor people will continue to suffer-there are the one who’ll have to sacrifice.makeshift
develoment planning in msia still sucks big time. the ideology is "gali lubang, tutup lubang". they’ll adjust to whatever will come later..hmmphhh..
or whenever the media cover for the issue…

  9. Bob K says:

IMHO, this goes beyond “sacrifice” .. it’s a deliberately ignoring the socio-economic problems caused by unsustainable development. We as citizens can and should continue demand for accountability and the pre-requisite institutional and legislative safeguards to ensure the same.

Then again, I also think we have digressed quite a bit from this post :P
