What Pak Kadir means by “a mark of respect”?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005 | 10:51 am @ SK

Information Minister Abdul Kadir Sheik Fadzir called on traders and motorists to close their stalls and stop their vehicles respectively for 10 minutes, as a mark of respect to honour the country 48th Independence Day. Quote:

"Traders should close their stalls five minutes before and after midnight and motorists to stop driving as a mark of respect." […]

In addition to that, I would like to suggest that Malaysians must refrain from attending your loo session five minutes before and after midnight, to show your patriotism towards the country.

Brilliant idea ya, Pak Kadir?

Reminds me of the time just a few years ago when some minister called for motorists at all toll booths to stop, toot their horns, and sing the national anthem at the stroke of midnight. What a laugh.

For those driving their own cars, get down and sing Negaraku. For those riding a tube, commuter train, or ferry, try to alight too. Only that I would advise you guys on the ferry to alight very carefully in the middle of Penang channel. You may wish to resume your journey after singing Negaraku and reciting Rukunegara.

If you have extra time, sing also God Save Our Queen, Majulah Singapura and Indonesia Raya. If you still have time, sing Cinta IT, Alhamdulilah Syukur Nikmat and Sejahtera Malaysia please. Also, try your best to recite Pancasila.

When you are singing Sejahtera Malaysia, in order to show a “mark of respect” towards this lovely song, you may wish to wear something patriotic such as Elaine Kang’s Star-Trek-like Cheungsam.
