Haze

[UPDATED VERSION]

Haze report from KLCC:

August 11, Thursday

0945: Visibility level increases to Times Square.

1135: Times Square is out of sight.

Via Bernama:

The government will not declare a state of emergency so long as the Air Pollutant Index (API) does not reach the 500 level, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Adenan Satem said.

"If the IPU exceeds 500, we will declare it (an emergency)," he told a press conference at the Ministry of Health, here Wednesday.

Health Minister Chua Soi Lek was also present at the press conference.

He said so far, only Port Klang was badly affected by the haze, with the API touching 410.

I hope Adenan Satem is sensible enough to the statistic, given that API 300 is considered as DANGEROUS. I’m really annoyed by the statement that only Port Klang was badly affected by the haze.

With this, I’m publishing a few photos here, more than enough to put some awakening slaps on him.

Meanwhile, Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya Campus to be closed for two days (11th & 12th August) due to the worsening haze condition. My applause goes to the president Ghauth Jasmon.

5:44pm: It’s raining around KLCC area.

API can be checked here, posted on the website of Department of Environment.

Sometimes there are certain interest to certain parties. Or perhaps in-capabilities.If it was up to me, I would mobilize an action team to deal with the haze immediately. Sometimes, you don’t wait until the last minute to take action. You don’t wait until the problem hits critical level before yu deal with it. You nip it before it hits danger level.

I’m that kind of person that normally don’t give the haze condition a damn, however, it’s so serious today that I can’t stop myself not to talk about that.

Now, KL API is 180 and it’s critical enough. However, our dear minister is saying that: Declare only when reach 500.

    I’m helpless, really.

Ok guys..wrong alarm…it stops raining as soon as i posted the comment earlier and went for a pee.

Disspointed as I have to ‘haze’ all the way back home again :(

  6. Justin says:

Most of are talking about the government declaring a state of emergnecy, that means holiday. I’m dissapointed at the government reaction to the 500kpi issue. Coz when they do, it will be like “nasi sudah jadi bubur”.

However I also ask this question,
“Am I dissapointed coz no holiday or am I dissapointed coz the gov. don’t care?”

To not let it spoil my day and not to blame myself. I choose both <- talk kok!

    LOL@Justin

Yea it rained for a very short while here in Subang. Quite heavy rain also. But very brief.

  8. SK says:

I just came back from KLCC, the condition is a lot better than just now.

Fingers cross that it won’t return to the hazy condition when I’m back to the office again, tmrw.

Perhap I can offer a little advise in choosing the right respirator. I was an OSHA product consultant or simple Resiprator Salesman once.

    1. Wear a proper N95 Particulate Respirator and not those green/white surgical mask.

    2. Why not surgical mask, it’s more cooling and comfortable than respirators? Of course it is cooling and comfortable because there is not air resistance. When you wear a resp. it covers your respiratory sys very well and because there is canvas between your nose and the environment, there must be air resistance. Surgical mask, it is leaking all over coz for it never covers your respiratory sys. properly. Surgical mask was not meant to protect human, it was meant to protect those expensive equipment from your saliva.

    3. You should feel warmer and you can perhaps smell your lunch coz when you breathe out, again there is air resistance due to the respirator (this will not happen for the case of a surgical mask coz air will tend to come in and go out thru less resistance path, and that means the air is not FILTER!!!)

    3. So what should I wear?
I recommend all N95 respirators. Some have exhalation valve (for easier breathing and avoid you smelling you own breath). Some are round, and some are foldable. No point buying resp. with carbon coz that is mean for organic vapors (unless you got colleagues that farts a lot) or acid gas. Haze are dust and particulates, so a decent N95 particulate respirator will do.

I recommend 3M 8210 N95 Particulate Respirator. Read wearing instructions for proper protection.

    Some 3M Respirators
