Samy Vellu & three per cent equity share

Monday, February 21st, 2005 | 1:05 pm @ SK

Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mustapa Mohamed said proper mechanism will be put in place under the Ninth Malaysian Plan to help Indian community attain the targeted three percent equity share by 2010.

Works Minister S. Samy Vellu, who is also the MIC president, when being reminded that Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan - second wealthiest malaysian who has a business empire that cuts across entertainment, space, oil, shipping, telecommunications, property and gaming globally; probably holds 1 percent of the Indians’ current 1.5 percent equity, he was quoted as saying:

"We hope he would gather more wealth so that the Indian equity would go up."

I was shocked when I came across this statement on yesterday TV3’s Buletin Utama. I hope that I was listening at the wrong end. But, unfortunately, not in the reality.

What’s the point in increasing the Indian equity portion while only an already rich individual tycoon benefits from it?

Will this make Malaysian’s Indian community achieve a better quality of life?

Or it’s only because of the feel good factor that will make Datuk Seri looks nicer beyond the eyes of Indian community?

No, no way lah, Datuk Seri.

Another statement which is worth questioning!

I guess people should really start thinking first before making any kind of statements to the press…

BTW SK, good job! You have a really sharp sense in noticing those ‘funny’ statements.

Hey, when certain permits can be issued to the already FILTHY RICH with the pretext of “encouraging involvements in entrepreneurship” while some others are still flipping burgers around each corner of the street, I’m not surprised seeing such statements in the Bolehland.

Go on questioning such statements, while I figure out how can I afford a Mazda 6, with the price of 2 Proton Perdana Executives…

Shouldnt the focus of Samy be on increasing socio-economic status of the indian community. As it stands the indians are prehaps the worst off currently in our country.
The mojority of indians belong to below avg income groups with a handful of professionals. Tamil schools are in a pethatic state, percentage of indian students are at an all time low in goverment unis and the social gap between the indian community and the other races in this country is so large that any well educated indian cant identify with the indian community.

Its high time MIC focused on these pressing issues and actually devise a proper plan of action not mere words.

What we can do about this? Can we establish a network to encounter those problems among the indians in this country? We need to reestablish our image in this country which been destroyed by MIC. Please get the professionals together to come out with POA for Indian this country.

Where have u all been? Have u not read the many proposals and suggestions made by the MIC. What should the MIC do if the government does not heed the MIC’s requests for Indians? Who is to be blamed. We are. Ask your government why the proposals and recommendations of the MIC was not fulfilled. Thing people.
